InfoRepresentative Jaime Capelo was born in Corpus Christi, Texas on August 17, 1962 into the family of Jaime and Geraldine Capelo. He graduated as Salutatorian of Roy Miller High School in 1980. Representative Capelo then went on to Yale University, graduating with B.A. in History in 1984. He returned to Corpus Christi where he earned his teaching certification from Corpus Christi State University and began teaching at his high school alma mater. After teaching for three years, he entered the University of Texas School of Law, and received his J.D. in 1991.

Representative Capelo began his public service career as a Corpus Christi City Council Member. While on the City Council, he was appointed Chair of the Wesley Seale Dam Oversight Committee, which straightened out the dam fiasco. After building a solid reputation as a local public official, he decided to run for the Texas House of Representatives. Representative Capelo won a special election for District 34 and was sworn into office on May 13, 1998.

During the 76th and 77th Legislative Sessions, representative Capelo served on the House Committees for Public Health and Judicial Affairs. As a member of the Public Health Committee, his tireless dedication to the health care issues of his district earned the respect of his legislative colleagues. For the 78th Legislative Session, Representative Capelo received the honor of being appointed Chairman of the Public Health Committee. He was also appointed to the Select Committee on State Health Care Expenditures and the Civil Practices Committee.

Representative Capelo is a member of LULAC, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Leadership Corpus Christi, Class XXIV. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Food Bank of Corpus Christi and the Corpus Christi Literacy Council. He has won numerous awards and recognitions for his legislative work, including the Combined Law Enforcement Association’s of Texas "Crimefighter of the Year" Award and the Texas School Food Service Association’s recognition for "Dedicated Service on Behalf of Students in the Child Nutrition Programs of the State of Texas" for his work on diabetes issues for Texas school children.

Representative Capelo is an attorney with the Law Offices of Jaime Capelo. He and his wife, Sandra, have two daughters, Berkeley Sol and Audrey Luna. His family is a member of St. Patrick Church in Corpus Christi.
