InfoSheila White offers political experience, community commitment, and a lifetime of living and working in Scarborough. She worked as a senior aide to then-North York mayor Mel Lastman from 1985 to 1998, directing communications, media and community programs.

She then served for five years as special advisor to Howard Hampton and the NDP at Queen’s Park and was NDP media and communications director for the 2003 election campaign, a key strategist on the team.

A confident and accomplished speaker, Sheila has for years provided media comment and political analysis as a regular on radio and television political panels.

Sheila has worked as a journalist, emcee, speaker, self-published children’s book author, choir leader, mentor, songwriter, musician, performer and entrepreneur.

A strong believer in community involvement, Sheila is active in her church and community. She’s on the board of directors of Community Unity Alliance, which administers youth scholarships and programs for a number of ethno-cultural groups and is a founding member of the Marcus Garvey Centre for Leadership and Education. She was vice-chair of special events for the Ontario Games for the Physically Disabled in 1987, which included a Royal Visit by the Duke and Duchess of York. A questionnaire Sheila developed is now being used by the RCMP, among others, as a tool for the elimination of racial discrimination. As well, she coordinated scores of programs for seniors, people with disabilities, ethno-cultural groups and youth.

A virtual lifelong Scarborough resident, Sheila is a homeowner in Scarborough-Rouge River and is President of the C.D. Farquharson Community Association, where she has been an active executive member for more than a decade. She has 20 years of community service to her credit. Most recently she led a highly successful anti-litter cleanup drive in her neighbourhood and has also conducted community chorale groups, including a Scarborough children’s choir.

Sheila is a two time municipal candidate in Scarborough East (Ward 44) and was the runner-up in both contests in 1999 and 2000. She ran federally as the NDP candidate in Scarborough Guildwood in 2004 and tripled the party’s support.

Her family history is steeped in accomplishment. Sheila is the child of a mixed race couple, Bill and Vivian (nee Keeler), whose roots extend to Nova Scotia, the United States and England. Her family includes among its members two nationally recognized historical figures (Rev. Capt. Wm. Andrew White and Portia White), a prize-winning author (George Elliott Clarke), a groundbreaking union activist (Jack White) and a Canadian senator (Donald Oliver). Sheila’s father, humanitarian Bill White, now deceased, was the first black person to run for political office in Canada in the federal riding of Spadina in 1949 for the CCF. He was a former Scarborough Citizen of the Year and Order of Canada recipient for community service.

Sheila lives happily in Scarborough with her partner, Alex King and stepdaughters Ama and Allie, who both now attend Ontario universities.
