InfoTony Martin has a long and distinguished career standing up for the people of his riding.

During Tony’s fifteen years as an elected representative, he has been a passionate fighter for Northern jobs and industries. He worked on the successful restructuring of Algoma Steel and St. Mary’s Paper, has aided area farmers in getting necessary assistance, achieved in guaranteeing wood and tree supplies for local forestry businesses, brought in public infrastructure improvements, and succeeded in bringing in legislation to improve protection for local franchise owners.

Tony was first elected Member of Parliament for the Riding of Sault Ste. Marie on June 28th, 2004. As M.P., Tony serves as the critic for FedNor, Human Resources Development, Social Development and Policy, and Child Care. He is also a member of the All Party Steel and Border Caucus, on the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills Development, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, and is a member of the Subcommittee on Agenda And Procedure for those committees.

Although serving as M.P. for only 18 months, Tony’s hard work has garnered national media attention and has earned him the respect of members from all parties in the House of Commons.

Among Tony’s accomplishments, he led the successful investigation into the practices of the Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC). As a result, community based, non-profit agencies gained protection and improved access to government money for delivering local employment support services.

Tony was also instrumental in forcing the government to deliver the child care program that had been an unfulfilled Liberal promise for 13 years. This pressure will bring 200 child care spaces to the riding, which will create new jobs and assist in attracting and supporting young families in the North.

Before entering politics, Tony had a long history as a community development worker, and was the recipient of several awards. He worked as a pastoral and youth worker with the Catholic Church, Co-ordinator of the Soup Kitchen Community Centre and General Manager of a co-op housing construction company. He also served on the Catholic School Board as a Trustee.

Tony was first elected as a Member of Provincial Parliament in 1990 and went on to become the Sault Ste. Marie Riding’s longest serving M.P.P.

Tony was born in Ireland and immigrated to Wawa with his family in 1960. He graduated from Laurentian University with a degree in Political Science in 1974 and has been a life-long resident of Northern Ontario, living in Sudbury and Elliot Lake before settling in Sault Ste. Marie. He is married to Saultite Anna Celetti and they have four children.
