InfoFamily:
The Toy family has been in America off and on since the mid 1800s. My mother and father immigrated from China (my father in 1948 and my mother from Hong Kong in 1958) to the United States, settling in Los Angeles, California to become naturalized American Citizens. It was not until then that someone from the Toy family would be born in America.
After my father graduated from Belmont High School in Los Angeles, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as an Infantryman with the 7th Infantry Division out of Fort Ord.
The neighborhood that I grew up in was mostly Armenian and Hispanic but is now slowly changing into an Eastern European, Southeast Asian, and Latino neighborhood. My sister Alice and myself are both graduates of the University of California at Los Angeles (GO BRUINS !). In 1996 my father (he was a green grocer ) went into semi-retirement and my mother, who was a seamstress, retired as well. My sister is a paralegal with Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc.
I am married to Sharon Crotser-Toy, whom I met at the Van Buren County Youth Fair. Sharon is the Librarian for the Lawrence Branch of the Van Buren District Library.

Education:

I am a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.) B.S. in Chemistry 1983 and M.S. in Chemistry in 1984.

Current Occupation:

In 1984, I was employed as a chemist in Atherosclerosis and Thrombosis Research, with the Upjohn Company Downtown Kalamazoo Research and Development facility (Now Pharmacia Inc.) . Then in 1987 I transferred to the Portage, Michigan Upjohn facility and have since been a research chemist producing potential bulk pharmaceuticals for phase I and phase II clinical trials in the areas of Central Nervous System Disorders, Diabetes, Infectious Diseases and Cancer.
I am currently involved with Information Technology issues at the Pfizer Inc. manufacturing plant in Portage, Michigan.

National Guard Service:

Last served as Executive Officer and Fire Direction Officer for Bravo Battery, First Battalion, 119th Field Artillery Michigan Army National Guard.

Active Duty Service:

I was initially trained as a Tactical Air Controller advising, assisting and coordinating all aspects of air support for army ground maneuver units on the capabilities of attack aircraft such as the A-10 Warthog. My former unit (the 172nd Tactical Air Support Squadron now part of the 110th Fighter Group) was called to active duty and served at Fort Hood, Texas and Fort Polk, Louisiana in support of the 256th Mechanized Infantry Battalion in preparation for Desert Storm, December 1990 to April 1991.
