Info | ST. JOHN, Charles, a Representative from New York; born at Mount Hope, Orange County, N.Y., October 8, 1818; attended the common schools and Goshen and Newburgh (N.Y.) Academies; engaged in lumbering on the Delaware River and in mercantile pursuits and banking at Port Jervis, N.Y.; served as internal revenue collector and later as president of the Barrett Bridge Co.; elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1875); resumed his former business activities; died in Port Jervis, N.Y., July 6, 1891; interment in Laurel Grove Cemetery.
