of Detroit, Wayne County, Mich. Born in Tallula, Issaquena County, Miss., January 2, 1894. Father of Charles Coles Diggs, Jr.. Mortician; member of Michigan state senate 3rd District, 1937-44; defeated in Democratic primary, 1944; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Michigan, 1940; charged on January 22, 1944 (along with 19 other current and former state legislators) with accepting bribes; tried, convicted, and sentenced to 3-5 years in prison; charged in a different bribery case in 1945; tried and convicted; charged again on July 20, 1946 (along with 18 other legislators) with accepting bribes to vote against a banking bill, but the entire case collapsed when the star prosecution witness, Charles F. Hemans, refused to testify; candidate for U.S. Representative from Michigan 1st District, 1948 (Republican primary), 1952 (Democratic primary). African ancestry. Member, Elks. Died in 1967. Interment at Detroit Memorial Park, Warren, Mich.
