| Info | Janet Stewart was born, raised and educated in Nebraska
where she learned the strong values that have guided her
adult life: independence, persistence and responsibility.
Janet’s early childhood years were spent in Blair where she
lived with her parents, Harold and Elaine Stewart, and
younger sister. The family moved to Omaha in 1962.
As Secretary of State, Janet will inspire all Nebraska
students to reach for their own potential and fulfill
their dreams.
Janet graduated from Omaha South High School in 1967
earning a Regent’s Scholarship to attend the University of
Omaha. She graduated from the University of Nebraska at
Omaha cum laude in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in
Economics. She completed her formal education with a law
degree from Creighton School of Law (1975) and a Master’
s of Social Work degree from UNO (1994).
As Secretary of State, Janet will apply her
professional work experience to run an efficient
cost-saving and customer-focused office.
Janet’s first job following graduation from law school was in
state government. She served as the Clerk/Executive
Director of the Nebraska Commission of Industrial
Relations from 1975-1980. In this position, Janet managed
staff, worked through the state budgeting process, and
conducted statewide collective bargaining elections.
Janet worked as a lawyer for the Mutual of Omaha
Companies from 1980-2004. In this position, Janet learned
valuable business skills including team building, project
management and quality improvement. Working closely
with information technology professionals, Janet developed
new databases to serve her practice area, and learned
cost-saving business record-keeping processes for the
21st Century. She travelled throughout the United States
managing litigation, learning how to foster cooperative
working relationships, and developing professional
negotiation skills.
Following her career at Mutual of Omaha, Janet had the
opportunity to work for the Ceres Group, a publicly traded
stock company with corporate offices in Ohio, Nebraska
and Kansas.
Janet joined the Register Law Office in Fremont in 2007,
where she practices with her husband of 24 years, Richard
Register. Her son and daughter-in law, Brian and Erica
Arnold, and four grandsons Brad, Camden, Owen and
Westin all live in Omaha.
