Info | Bangor lawyer Leonard N. Zito became a Northampton County judge on Tuesday when the state Senate unanimously approved his nomination.
Gov. Ed Rendell last month nominated the 65-year-old Zito to complete the 10-year term of former President Judge Robert A. Freedberg, who was confirmed to the state Superior Court in June. Bernie Kieklak, an aide to state Sen. Lisa Boscola, confirmed at 11:30 p.m. that Zito had been confirmed by a 50-0 vote.
Zito replaced former county Judge Jack A. Panella for 18 months when Panella joined the state Superior Court in 2004. At that time, Zito agreed not to run for the judgeship in the next election, but that's not part of the deal this time around.
He also established his own practice in 1971 and today is the head of the Law Offices of Zito, Martino and Karasek formed in 1983.
A former chief public defender, Zito has been solicitor for Northampton County Council.
Zito holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Villanova School of Law and a bachelor's degree from the University of Scranton. He was admitted to practice law in Northampton County in 1971. Zito is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, Pennsylvania Supreme Court, Pennsylvania Superior Court, U.S. District Courts for Eastern and Middle Districts of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and the U.S. Tax Court.
He has been married to Patricia (Guida) Zito, a retired schoolteacher, for 34 years. They have three children.
