InfoC. Adrienne Rhodes, who just resigned from Daily News LP to consider other career opportunities, including a possible run for a congressional seat will now serve Daily News LP as a consultant.
Before she left Daily News LP, she had an agreement with WCBS-TV’s “News at 4” to promote the Daily News’ revamped Saturday and Sunday editions in weekly segments, and had started developing a documentary for the History channel containing historical photographs for dailynewspix.com.

She said that at a very young age in the 60’s, she saw Black people being beaten down, locked up, and hosed with water just so they might be given a chance to choose their lot in life, and that she felt a real need to balance professional achievement and social responsibility.

“As the oldest daughter, or Mommy #2, in a family of seven children, I learned to accept responsibility early in life,” Rhodes said.

Until she resigned she was the highest ranking African American female executive at a leading daily newspaper in the New York Metropolitan area—the New York Daily News—and the first woman of color to have been appointed vice president in the 79-year-history of the newspaper.

“If you are the sort of person who is willing to roll up your sleeves and burn the midnight oil, people tend to believe that you will succeed,” she said.

She said that for most of her career she has been willing to do just that and that she was fortunate enough to have a bird’s-eye view of many chief executives and how they operated in several industries.

“It turns out that most assignments have not been of the ‘let’s do something and make our customers feel good’ nature. So my exposure has tended to require some level of problem-solving and critical thinking about how to advance business goals.”

Rhodes has served as chairwoman of the New York Urban League, the Manhattan Advisory Board’s largest fund-raiser. Moreover, with the inauguration of President Clinton in his first term, she convinced the board to honor such Black leaders in government as Rep. Charles Rangel, State Comptroller H. Carl McCall, Turner Corporate Affairs’ Vice President Hilton O. Smith, and New York State Director of Legislative Affairs James H. Harding Jr.

“If you can dream it, you can achieve it,” Rhodes said. “I attribute my professional achievement to focusing, working hard, listening and watching very carefully, and when in doubt, asking questions.”
Before joining Daily News LP, Rhodes was the director of communications at the United Negro Fund (UNCF). While she worked for UNCF, she established herself as an innovator and as a leader. She handled the restructuring and operations management of the division, which served as the public relations arm of the $60 million charity.

Rhodes had spent the previous years in the circulation and promotion services at The New York Times Company Magazine Group, and was the public relations manager at Diane Von Furstenberg Inc.

Rhodes serves on the National Political Congress of Black Women’s Media and Entertainment Commission, and is the winner of numerous awards including NYS’ Martin Luther King Jr. ‘Living the Dream’ Award.

She completed her course-work leading to B. S. in marketing, advertising and communications at the State University of New York at F.I.T. She completed with honors the “Business of Television” and “Dramatic Writing for Film and Television” at the New York University’s School of Film, Video and Broadcasting.
