Info | One of the first “baby boomers,” I was born in 1946, the year after my father returned from WWII. My parents, Martin and Leota Null Smith, were both born and raised in Columbia, where I, too, was born and raised. Both came from big families, so I had a large extended family of aunts and uncles and cousins. I attended church and school in Columbia and graduated from Columbia High School in 1964.
In 1964, I entered Millersville State College, and after three years, I graduated with the Class of 1967. That same year, Solanco hired me to teach English.
In 1993, I became a student at Widener University School of Law and obtained my JD in 1996. During my last two years of law school, I also taught six sections of English before retiring in 1997. Since that time, I have been an attorney, practicing in the areas of wills and estates, disability law and elder law and doing quite a bit of pro bono work.
I took office as Millersville Borough Council President in 2004. I am proud of my service as an elected official and a community leader. Before my term expires, the borough will move into a new municipal building. I have been instrumental in founding a local historical society and in helping to produce the Millersville Community Parade. I have enjoyed promoting my community and coordinating programs such as Our Town Millersville by WITF and Millersville Night at the Barnstormers.
For many years, I have served on the Millersville University Alumni Board, the past four years as Treasurer. I have also served on both the MUAA Nominations and Awards Committee and the Financial Planning Committee.
In 1973, I married J. Philip Gerber, a classmate of mine from Millersville, year before after his discharge from the Army. We bought a home in Millersville in 1976, and we still live there. Phil is now a registered nurse, and he, too, is very active in our community.
