Internal party polling shows the Lib Dems are fast closing on the Conservatives in the Chesham and Amershan by-election race, with one party analyst “confident” they can claim an upset victory.

Liberal Democrat polling figures, seen by City A.M., put the party on 41 per cent and the Conservatives on 45 per cent just days before the 17 June by-election in the usually safe Tory seat.

Wow, indeed. Get ready for British political analysts to discuss a realignment in politics when looking at Hartlepool as well as Chesham & Amersham.

To be fair, I'm sure a sizable number of Labour voters voted tactically for the Lib Dems. However, the Labour Party did put some effort into this race so these results carry more weight than if they ran a paper candidate.

Labour's test is July 1st in Batley & Spen.

If the Conservatives under perform in Batley on July 1 after all the build up after Hartlepool - it will see like two Conservative losses.

Someone who will be watching these results closely is Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab. His seat is another London commuter belt seat that he only won by four points in 2019 (new boundary lines would switch that to a 0.9% Lib Dem notional advantage).

The ruling party almost invariably loses these by-elections in Britain (which is one reason the result in Hartlepool was so surprising).

The interesting detail here, is the utter collapse of the Labour vote.

One perspective from a Lib Dem candidate about voters in the Shires and their impressions of Labour leaders:
