I didn't either.

I really hope Abrams will reconsider the open special senate seat!

Who put Paul Broun in this race? Got a chuckle from that one.
If Isakson made a recommendation, I bet it would be for Chris Carr. Don't know what Kemp's thought process will be, but I don't think he will go for a caretaker.

Abrams has already ruled it out...as for the appointment, I'd think maybe Collins is the favorite? I've been trying to think it over since I heard about the retirement but just can't think of any strong names, in my opinion

Jeaux: If you're a betting person, who do you see Kemp appointing to Isakson's US Senate seat ?

It feels very vain of Kemp to have people come begging to him for the seat.
Isakson has clashed with Trump more than most GOP senators. Will his recommendation, if given, matter? Also, could Trump recommend/endorse a potential candidate? (If I were him, I would absolutely do so.)

I went through all the applications that have been posted (9/17-9/19) and added several former candidates that applied that were already in the database.

I see Kemp appointing a Trump-ista to Isakson's US Senate seat.

Governor Kemp closed the application period last night.

Anyone have any educated guesses on who the favorite is to be appointed?
|
|
|
One would think he would appoint a woman because they are so severely underrepresented among elected GOP officials nationwide and deserve a seat of the table of governing, however, we all know many Republicans would see that as a white man losing out on a job to a minority.

If I had to guess a shortlist, it would be Kelly Loeffler, Jan Jones, Doug Collins, Robyn Crittenden, and Allen Poole. It all depends on Kemp's strategic thinking: rally the base, win back the suburbs, improve diversity, provide a reliably ally for the President, etc.
Kemp has surprised some political circles in Georgia by appointing diverse candidates to various posts, so he could go bold in terms of appointing the first minority Senator or the second female Senator (hopefully one who can serve for multiple days).

Te AJC is reporting that Doug Collins is leaning towards running in the primary for this seat even if he isn't appointed.

Per the AJC:
Gov. Brian Kemp embarked on a secretive trip to Washington with Kelly Loeffler, his favorite for a U.S. Senate opening, to try to win Donald Trump’s support after the president repeatedly pushed for another rival, according to several people with direct knowledge of the discussions.
The Sunday trip did not go as expected for Kemp, who encountered a president who was said to be frustrated with his decision-making process and blunt about his support for U.S. Rep. Doug Collins and others whom he considered to be safer political picks.

Silly Kemp. Trying to convince this President of anything when he has his mind made up is futile. Trump has brought the ultimate corporate culture to the White House. He is the leader and you don't question the leader.
I'll give credit to Kemp for doing this in "secret." But still how secret could it have been if it was leaked out to the press.
He could have at least softened him up a little by comparing him to the second coming of Christ before this visit like Rick Perry does when he wants something from the President.
Play to the ego, not the brain Brian.
Ultimately Kemp will have to decide if he is his own man or Trump's man. I guess we'll find out when he makes the pick.

I don't know how Kemp can think that the most important qualification for a US Senator isn't speaking up for Trump at his impeachment hearings.

The Governor of a state shouldn't have to get approval from the president for his Senate pick. I would be outraged if my governor did that, regardless of the president. But, of course, with the cult of Trump, there will be zero backlash.

Kemp staffer responds to Mr. Gaetz:

I don't understand why more Georgia Republicans aren't pissed that their governor sought the blessing of the President before he appointed their next Senator, but then again given who the President is and who core Republican voters are I get it. As a Democrat, if Northam had went to DC to secure Obama's blessing before appointing someone to a senate vacancy I'd be pissed.

Does anyone have any interest in entering in all of the candidates who applied?

I went through the first three days of applications earlier on and added anyone already in the database. If someone wants me to add the other former candidates I suppose I can. It may have until after my exams though.
|
|
|
The reason I say not to literally every person who applied is that there are likely several thousand who applied who will never do anything in politics ever again and just applied because “what the hell?”
