Who has an edge in a firehouse stile primary?

I'd have to guess that the candidates with support around Richmond were always gonna have an advantage although pretty much the entire district (except Southampton and Surry Counties) gets local TV from Richmond, so the more rural parts of the district might see news stories mentioning that a primary is being held.

For open State Senate seats in VA, is there an appointment or does it remain vacant until an election?

So what's the thinking here about Morrissey. He jumps in even though the format doesn't favor him because he thinks he can get Republicans and Independents "who consider themselves Democrats" to vote in the one day primary?
Is he setting up an Independent bid? Planning to run for something else or switch parties and this is a publicity setup?

TIL what a "firehouse primary" is.

for some reason, I don't think a dude who posted in plantation outfits with his child bride is necessarily a coherent candidate even if he somehow got elected to the State Senate
i've read some people claim that if either McClellan or Morrissey was nominated, they'd almost have to resign from the State Senate due to an in-session fundraising ban, a resignation that would help Republicans in a close chamber

RBH: for some reason, I don't think a dude who posted in plantation outfits with his child bride is necessarily a coherent candidate even if he somehow got elected to the State Senate
Right. We agree. But a dude in another state that was an incoherent candidate almost won that race on a pro-life platform despite the fact that he paid for at least 2 abortions and fathered 3 children out of wedlock he didn't provide support for.
For some reason Morrissey has a following that we can't quite figure out. That being said, still trying to figure out his angle in all of this, particularly if a firehouse primary will be tough to win.
Maybe I should stop obsessing about trying to figure out the logical angle of his candidacy when I've just described the illogical nature of some politics.

Now that Bagby's out, there's no way McClellan doesn't win the nomination. She has pretty much every VA Democrat behind her, and already has higher name recognition than the other candidates.
