Were people really that shocked? I thought it was obvious that the Canadian Liberals were facing a big drubbing next election. I compared them to the UK Conservatives.

Sounds like most were still predicting a 1 or 2 point Liberal victory. Agreed. Canadian Liberals are in bad shape. Public wants change just like in the UK.
