Sources close to the president say he has repeatedly shrugged it off, implying that he doesn’t have to worry about the money owed to America’s creditors—currently about $21 trillion—because he won’t be around to shoulder the blame when it becomes even more untenable. - [Link]

Yeah, sounds about right. The debt only maters when a Democrat is in office anyway.

The GOP is already teeing up their switch to being concerned about the deficit when a Democrat is in the White House:

A GOP strategist who has been consulting with Senate campaigns said Republicans have been carefully laying the groundwork to restrain a Biden administration on federal spending and the budget deficit by talking up concerns about the price tag for another round of virus relief. The thinking, the strategist said, is that it would be very hard politically to agree on spending trillions more now and then in January suddenly embrace fiscal restraint. - [Link]

In an exclusive interview with Spectrum News, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. slammed President Joe Biden’s newly proposed budget and complained it should have been presented “more than a month ago” – but he declined to say when Republicans would present a counter-proposal. - [Link]

Thats right! And then we'll propose tripling the income tax. The middle class will surely come our way now! #DemonratsStink

The debt-ceiling standoff rumbled on as congressional Republican leadership last week rejected all White House proposals seeking to reduce the U.S. deficit by closing a number of tax loopholes, the Washington Post reported Monday, citing three people familiar with the matter. - [Link]

Yes, but just barely.

No, it'll be a decent portion and maybe a surprising congressperson or two (MTG), but most GOP voices will try to call this a "Democrat debt bill."

Didn't McCarthy say he was obeying the Hastert rule and a majority of Republicans has to approve it?

There are enough Republicans who will do as McCarthy asks for there to be majority Republican support. Then just enough Democrats will vote for it to get a majority of the House.

I'm confused why the Democrats would vote against the release from the House Rules Comm but commit to vote for the bill in the floor vote. Apparently the vote out of the rules committee was 7-6 with all 4 Dems and 2 Freedom Caucus Republicans voting against it.

BrentinCO: I'm confused why the Democrats would vote against the release from the House Rules Comm but commit to vote for the bill in the floor vote.

My assumption is that Democrats want to vote against it to the extent possible while also ensuring that it passes. Having Democrats opposed probably also makes it easier for McCarthy to get Republicans to vote for it.

This pretty much answers my question. They are there to support it but putting the responsibility on the majority to pass the rule.

In regards to the rule, it’s very simple: The majority is responsible for passing the rule,” Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), the Democratic whip, told reporters in the Capitol just hours before the rule vote is scheduled.

My assumption is some Democrats actually want to vote against it, but also want it to pass because they understand how government works.

^ Alot to unpack.

About as clear a "I'm running for re-election" statement he has made. And it gives insights into his electoral strategy: "I'm about bipartisanship and compromise."

At the same time its gonna piss off Congressional Republicans who will now go back to McCarthy for getting duped by Biden and giving him a "win."

In that sense it was a brilliant speech. He took a victory lap, setup his 2024 re-election, and stoked the fires that are dividing Congressional Republicans further

In contrast Republicans will be running strongly on Biden Democrats driving America in the wrong direction And the freedom caucus will certainly be making a some sort ofstand before next year's election to setup Trump (presumably the nominee) and play into Biden's hand.

In contrast - here's a tweet sent out by the Colorado GOP....against a Republican member of congress in Colorado who voted for the debt deal. Granted the Colorado GOP is run by Dave Williams who primaried Lamborn - but it does show the division that exists in the Republican party that Biden is trying to stoke the flames of.

So, the bi-partisan guy wins easily right? I'm not so sure. Its still about the electoral college and its gonna be real tight. And I'm not sold yet that the Democrats are as united as they appear - especially with Biden's popularity numbers. Its gonna be about if they come out in the numbers needed in Purple states. We'll see.
