Early election watch

Bloc will try to force an election unless Justin Trudeau, Bill Morneau and Katie Telford resign [Link]

That seems unlikely.

NDP has no money and Conservatives don't have a leader. Who will go along with the Bloc (in the middle of a pandemic)? Also, how many more seats does the Bloc think they can squeeze out of Québec?

With politicos across the country caught in election fever, Liberal MPs, candidates, and campaign managers are preparing for an election campaign to get started on Aug. 8 or Aug. 15, with the election date set to be Sept. 13 or Sept. 20.

“‘Be ready for the writ to be dropped on Aug. 8’ is the message I’m getting from cabinet ministers and MPs,” said one Liberal source who spoke to The Hill Times on not for attribution basis.

Others are saying the election will likely be called on Aug. 15. Liberal sources said that if the writs are issued on Aug. 8, the election date would be Sept. 13, and if the start date is Aug. 13, the election day will be Sept. 20. They expect the writ period to be 36 days long.

Liberal sources said that the only way the next election will not be called in the next two weeks if the Delta variant of COVID-19 causes case numbers to go up significantly.

“We’re too deep in to not drop the writ [in the next two weeks],” said another Liberal source.

Gonna be a busy month.

At least the campaign period won't be as long as 2015's absolutely grueling 78-day campaign season...

More circumstantial evidence of an impending election call.

Interesting snapshot of Canadian social attitudes (note the provincial variations):

Surprising that QC is at the bottom and AB is at the top. QC perceived to be the most progressive province on most issues and AB thought to be the most conservative. But I guess you can rack up the QC results to the historical Catholicism in the province maybe?

I mean ketchup has a lot of sugar and tomatoes are technically a fruit. But this is still gross if true.

You can get ketchup with no added sugar.

RP: You can get ketchup with no added sugar.

Okay sure. But sugarless ketchup popsicles are probably even worse. Do these sound good to you?

Nope.

Canadian delegation in London; see how many you can name! 8 of 9 for me.

I can name 6 of 9. +2 I recognize but can't remember their names (both GGs). And I'm stumped by the man on the left unless that's a really old former PM John Turner who has lost hair and I guess decided not to get dressed up for the picture.

And the fact that John Turner is deceased, haha! Guy on the far left is former Governor General Edward Schreyer (had to look him up myself).

I'm going to leave this link here
[Link]

Pretty amazing link of all past Canadian elections, by-elections, and the candidates in each riding (1867 - present) curated by the Parliament in database format.

You can link over to the ridings and it will list the elections for that riding. And true to form for Canada being data transparent, you have the option to download the data in XLSX by choosing which columns of data you want.

Incredible. I just love Canada. They make it so easy for data nerds. This will probably fill in some of the gaps we have.

As an FYI it will be a busy October (before our National election) for Canada's provinces. 3 provinces are expected to go to their fixed election dates within 10 days of each other. (BC = 10/19, NB = 10/21, and SK = 10/28)

I've added the events for each.
