Description | East Timorese youth-interests party focused primarily on employment issues. Party was formed by street gangs led by the martial arts group Korka [Wise Children of the Land or KORK], headed by the husband of KHUNTO’s leader, Armanda Berta dos Santos. Members take juramento (blood oaths), similar to the 'omerta' rituals used in the American Mafia, stressing their loyalty to the party and inviting misfortune should they betray it [which has been pegged as murder for disloyalty]. Though the party states that one of its goals is to fight corruption in government, many of the party's leaders have criminal records. Party holds five seats in parliament and allies itself with former ruling party, Fretilin [Kmanek Haburas Unidade Nasional Timor Oan (KHUNTO); translated as "Enrich the National Unity of the Sons of Timor"]. |
