Description | United States Navy
The nation's first navy was created by an act of Continental Congress on October 13, 1775. The Continental Navy was originally outfitted with two vessels which searched munitions ships supplying the British fleet. Over the course of the War of Independence, the Continental Navy had activated more than fifty ships. On April 30, 1798, the United States Congress officially established the United States Navy as an independent authority from the civilian War Department. |
