Info | BEDFORD, Gunning, (cousin of Gunning Bedford, Jr.), a Delegate from Delaware; born in Philadelphia, Pa., April 7, 1742; became a major in the Continental Army in 1775; lieutenant colonel in Haslet’s Regiment in 1776, being wounded in the battle of White Plains; subsequently appointed muster-master-general in 1776; was admitted to the bar in 1779; member of the Delaware general assembly from New Castle County 1784-1786; elected a Member of the Continental Congress for the term 1786-1787 but declined to serve and resigned January 15, 1787; member of the Delaware convention in 1787 which ratified the Federal Constitution; elected as Governor of Delaware in 1796 and served until his death in New Castle, Del., September 30, 1797; interment in Immanuel Churchyard.
