Info | Thoms brings a unique mix of public sector experience at the federal, state and local level, as well as private sector and military experience, which allows him to provide tremendous leadership for Tacoma. He has more than 20 years of experience in the private and public sectors representing the interests of both elected officials and industry leaders, and has worked directly with Fortune 500 companies as well as start-ups.
Council Member Thoms has an intimate knowledge of military and legislative issues impacting Washington state, having worked in the capitol in Olympia prior to serving on Senator Maria Cantwell’s staff from 2000 – 2007. He was an integral member of Senator Cantwell’s staff, and worked on important policies impacting the State of Washington and Tacoma, including projects such as the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center, the first ever Boys & Girls Club Hope Center, and funding for the D Street overpass to expand commerce along the Thea Foss. He served in many important positions including Eastern and Central Washington Director, South Sound Director and finally Deputy State Director.
Council Member Thoms is currently the chief executive officer of a public and governmental affairs firm in Tacoma specializing with private sector clients creating jobs and growth in the region and across the state. He is also a member of the Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Board and the Family Justice Center Board.
Before calling Washington State home, Council Member Thoms worked on Capitol Hill from 1991- 1997 serving in the U.S. Navy, as a legislative aide to Congressman John LaFalce and Dutko Worldwide, one of the most respected government and public relations firms on Capitol Hill specializing in researching federal legislative issues.
Council Member Thoms is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War and is currently a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserves stationed as a commanding officer of the U.S. Navy’s Office of Information West in Los Angeles, where he leads a team of public affairs specialists with the entertainment industry on feature films and television.
Council Member Thoms calls the North End of Tacoma home, and is honored to represent families and businesses at the heart of Tacoma in District 2.
