InfoKeith Fountain was born and raised in Ottawa. His sense of civic duty and pride in a career serving the public developed at home at an early age as the grandson of two second world war veterans and the son of a teacher and a civil servant. His interest in the world around him started at Glebe Collegiate High School, where he learned a love of Latin, Greek mythology, game theory and took an active interest in political issues. He and his friends started a small alternative school newspaper and he was student council president.

After high school, Keith headed along with other young Canadians to Sri Lanka to dig ditches and do other work in that South Asian country as part of the Canada World Youth program. From Colombo, Keith studied political science and international politics at McGill University in Montreal and then joined the Canadian Foreign Service in 1990.

Fifteen years in the Canadian foreign service have given Keith a number of formative impressions and experiences. He learned what a powerful incentive freedom is to people and a country while serving in Poland in the mid-1990s, as that country struggled to cast off the long-standing communist influence over its economy. He watched in wonder as young men and women experienced for the first time real pride and accomplishment in being able to open their own business or build and own their own home.

In Malaysia from 1998 to 2001, he developed a respect for different perspectives, customs and traditions while living and working alongside Muslim, Buddhist, Christian and Hindu peoples. He also worked with young political activists as they sought to organize and influence change in a democracy plagued by one-party rule and which overtly sought to crush voices for reform by jailing political opponents, intimidating media and academics and discriminating in education and housing programs against minority groups.

Keith returned from Malaysia in 2001 to serve as a foreign policy advisor in the Privy Council Office, the department which serves the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, where he gained valuable insight and experience at the centre of decision making in the Government of Canada. Keith was then dispatched to Kabul, Afghanistan, to direct the opening of Canada's embassy in that country, which was still struggling to regain security and rebuild after the oppressive Taliban regime decimated the lives of women and children.

Keith has always felt that it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness. He got involved in politics and ultimately sought the Conservative Party nomination in Ottawa Centre because he believes that Canadians deserve better government. He knows from personal experience living and working around the world that democracy is a work in progress; one that demands the constant vigilance and contributions of its citizens -- in large and small ways -- to make sure government serves people better and is more accountable.

He also believes that governments in Canada should respect that Canadians know best how to spend their hard-earned money and that they should have the freedom and every opportunity to make the best possible life for themselves and their family. That government should be accountable, tax wisely and only enough to deliver the best results in areas, such as health and education, that benefit all Canadians and their families.

Keith loves to drive his motorcycle and spend time at a cottage or camping with his family.

He is married to Jacqueline Bogden and they have a two-year-old daughter, Kira.
