Info | Horace Lurton was the oldest justice ever appointed to the Supreme Court. He was a traditional judicial conservative who was well noted for his opposition to labor unions. One observer was quoted as saying "There are two kinds of Judges. Those that favor personal rights, and those that favor property rights. Judge Lurton is the latter".
Lurton was considered a fair judge, although liberals saw him as merely an irritable tool of railroad bosses. Including calling him "Private Car Lurton" for his liberal use of private rail cars. However, liberals had no need to fear as he generally went along with the majority which brought about moderately liberal reforms including an income tax, which Lurton voted for.
Lurton was an industrious member of the court, but never authored a major descision or dissent. He most frequently voted with Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
