The best doctors will tell you that after 40 years of age that the average human loses about half an inch of height every decade. This is probably accelerated in appearance in some cases with osteoporosis (which tends to be more prevalent in women).
So if Roselynn Carter was 5 foot 5 inches in her prime. 5 decades X 1/2 inch = 2.5 inches shorter. She's probably now about 5 foot 2 1/2 inches or shorter now. Add in likely stooped posture (even sitting) from a compressed backbone...and this makes sense.
Joe Biden is just under 6 feet tall now and frankly in very good shape for his age. So yeh he looks likes a giant next to her.
As a 6 foot 6 tall guy...I look like a giant in photos next to 6 feet tall people (worse with shorter). I appreciate this photo.
