They couldn't agree on holding a primary, so both candidates said they would just move on to the first round of the general election.

Should we put no nominee of their former coalition just to prevent confusion

I believe so. I think we have a "No Candidate filed" candidate.

Yasna Provoste officially declares her candidacy today: [Link] Her declaration is expected to excite others to cannonball right in [they've just been dipping their toes these last few weeks]. No one's going to achieve absolute majority at this rate of candidate entry. The verdict will turn out to be a mess on Election day. A run-off is close to guaranteed after November 21st.

Since ME-O is probably not gonna actually get to run, I will add Guillier for the time period

So a more or less united left taking a small lead over the right, but not taking a majority due to the presence of a Christian Democratic center-left?

That doesn't sound ominously familiar or anything...

It rhymes a bit with the 1970 election that Allende won.

The electoral system is a bit different this time around, in that Allende had to be approved by the Congress, whereas this will go to a second round. But I think it's still wise to remember the course of the Allende government in the current situation

Thanks, E Pluribus. Adding Zambrano may be premature, however. Zambrano's going to need to collect 33,000 signatures, and gather them faster than Greek God Mercury, before he can be anointed a full-fledged candidate, per the rules. [He only received the nod from 43 'voters' so far [Link]

Did Canelo and Radovic get the signatures then?

I remember at least Canelo still needed them

Sichel's numbers have steadily risen to the point where the latest poll now shows him leading by almost double-digits - 25.6% support to Boric's 16.1% (quite an implosion for this wunderkind, BTW) [Link] Even more interesting is Kast's step to third place at 11.3%, shoving Provoste to fourth (the much-disliked diversion of the Unidad Constituyente primary is probably not helping her).

Few have much faith in the cogency of Latin American polls to date, they've been ridiculously off in Ecuador, Peru and here (remember 40-points ahead superstar Daniel Jadue?). Nonetheless, it'll still be a Sichel/Boric contest in the second round, I predict, no matter who comes on top in this one.

The Chile Vamos coalition was just renamed Chile Podemos Más (or Chile Podemos +; translating as Chile Can Do More or, literally, Chile We Can More) effective Friday, August 20, 2021 [Link] This new name will be, or may have already been, registered at the Servel before the deadline of August 23, 2021 [Link]

The deadline for registration was 11:59pm yesterday, and in those last few minutes (and not to be outdone by Sichel's new "Chile Podemos Más"), the Constituent Unity pact (we learn this morning) decided to rename itself "Nuevo Pacto Social" (New Social Pact) [Link]

All's well until it doesn't end so well.

Diego Ancalao presents about 35 thousand signatures, more than needed, joins the small nine-person presidential club, and all is peaches and roses. Servel discovers two days later that 23,161 of those signatures were fake, signed before a notary who was dead; "(Patricio) Zaldívar's notary ceased to function in 2018 and said notary died in February of this year." [Link] The Servel subsequently boots out Ancalao, reports him for criminal prosecution, and tags his List of the People party for fraud and complicity, its 'team leaders' facing criminal prosecution and jail time. This may be the end of this party.

Next:

Confucius say: "Passageway perilous if bulb not too bright."

Self-declared 'Independent' Gino Lorenzini couldn't resist bragging about his party, Felices y Forrados, and does so AFTER he was approved by the Servel, thinking (or not actually thinking) he successfully pulled a fast one: "The independent candidacy of Mr. Gino Lorenzini Barrios was rejected by four votes and one inability, for failing to comply with the requirement indicated in the final paragraph of Article 5 of Law No. 18,700. That is, having been affiliated with a political party within the nine months prior to the expiration of the deadline for submitting declarations of candidacies." [Link]

A body-shaking steep takeoff from under the radar for José Kast to first place and climbing is the talk of the Latin American press [Link] The surge begun in early October, at first dismissed as the equivalent of seeing a fuzzy image of an alien saucer, has now seriously solidified into an Antonov An-225. Equally dumbfounding is the collapse of Sichel, now at 5th place behind Franco Parisi (!) Kast is sucking in all of the air that inflated Sichel's balloon and siphoning off Sichel allies by the legions [Link] and [Link] .

Contrast the figures in today's poll with the one released by the same pollster on October 15 where Boric had a smashing double-digit lead over Kast [Link] . A perplexing state of affairs for Boric et alliés, especially as we enter a poll black-out period beginning November 7th.
