| Description |
When the 2nd district's republican State Senator announced his retirement the district's popular democrat Assemblyman, Vince Mazzeo, jumped into the race. Democrats backed the district's other Assemblyman John Armato and made Atlantic County Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick his running mate.
A number of republicans jumped into the race, and after a tumultuous convention former Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian and former Deputy Attorney General Claire Swift were left as the two republican candidates.
After nearly ousting Mazzeo and Armato in 2019, the GOP has high hopes. Guardian and Swift are top notch candidates. A GOP win in this district is reliant upon decent margins in Atlantic City, and lots of cash. Guardian brings the votes, and Swift brings the cash.
It's not all doom and gloom for the democrats. This district has a strong democratic voter registration edge, and Swift and Guardian have little name recognition, so they will have to work much harder than the democrats who have name recognition in areas that aren't even in the district.
