Description |
Considered the favorite to win the AG's race, Pickering made a major gaffe a week before the election by airing radio spots in the black community accusing Allain of having been a member of the segregationist Citizens Council.
The charge was immediately branded as false by Allain, and Pickering had to retract it contending it was the fault of overzealous campaign staffers. That faux-pas was believed to have cost him the election.
