I'm trying to ascribe a political motive to this, but failing to find one.

I was trying to make Park Cannon a speculative candidate, but she can be removed for the time being if needed.

I agree....i was completely expecting a concurrent special election in November

A potential runoff for this race if held in November would have had to take place after January 3rd, making the election moot.

As the field stands right now, barring a last-minute filing, this looks like it's bound to end in a runoff. Work ten days in Washington and forever be known as Congressman/Congresswoman.

Saw an article this morning (of course can't find it now), that said former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell (Mayor of Atlanta 1970-1974) was going to run in this race (politics1 also has him listed as a candidate).

He had told reporters he was going to qualify, but I guess he didn't. Would have probably made it to a runoff; he's the unofficial "Mayor of Buckhead" (north side of ATL).

I saw Nikema's statement on why she wouldn't run in this race.

There might be an advantage to run and get seated before the rest of the Freshman who willl be sworn in late Jan.

But also a risk to run in a crowded (and meaningless) special election that she could lose.

How many are running because she's not, though?

Fair point, PA Indy. I think Ms. Thomas was planning on running, as well as Mr. Martin. Don't know about the others.

To Unum, Nikema will run in November for the full term that starts in January. This race is for the period until January 3rd.

This race is really an honor title for the two-three months of the term if there is no run-off.

Plus the winner will likely get windowless office the interns have lunch in with the squeaky table and busted furniture.

That's what I was thinking: so what's the point of a special election? These guys are gonna serve for like 3 months then Nikema will serve for 2 years.

NC had 2 house seats vacant for 9 months I think Georgia can survive with 1 seat vacant for less time

It might be even worse for a short-termer during the transition! Normally, someone filling the remainder of a term inherits their predecessor's office, then has to move. Coming into office in the middle of November with the office pool starting up and outgoing members relegated to make-shift offices that'll basically be single-person desks in cafeteria and old storage space, getting a spot with interns and furniture would be an upgrade!

No clue what the governor thought the point of this was. But he's the same guy who gave Georgia Kelly Loeffler...

what's the GA resign-to-run rules say about Nikema running in the special election? compared to whatever she might have to do to run for the full term?

Here's the relevant provision in the State Constitution:
“The office of any state, county, or municipal elected official shall be declared vacant upon such elected official qualifying, in a general primary or general election, or special primary or special election, for another state, county, or municipal elective office or qualifying for the House of Representatives or the Senate of the United States if the term of the office for which such official is qualifying for begins more than 30 days prior to the expiration of such official’s present term of office.”

So I think state lawmakers can usually run for Congress in general elections because of that last clause. I'll research about the special election, because that would apply to Ms. Thomas (she is retiring, though, and the legislature is out of session).

It seems to me people just want to say "I served in Congress". I would go for it if I was a City Council member for example...
