No newspaper reported the results of this race in stories about the state canvass. The results shown here are an estimate based on the vote for other members of the Council of State in 1924. The Raleigh News & Observer commented on 11/27/1924 that Lacy's total fell behind the remainder of the Democratic ticket due to a concerted effort to scratch his name on election day.

Description

In the election of 1924, none of the statewide Democratic nominees were Methodists. Burch was the sole Republican statewide nominee who was a Methodist; in fact, he was then serving as the treasurer of the state Methodists. One of Burch's themes was to remind Methodists that he was the only candidate of their faith. A sustained effort emerged to get Methodists who were otherwise voting straight Democratic to cross over and vote for Burch. Although Lacy still won the race, Burch led the Republican ticket enough to embarrass the Democrats; contemporary newspapers declined to publish the result of the election.
