Rocky Mountain News, April 2, 1867

Description |
RESEARCH NOTES: Verify number against a second copy as the DPL copy of Rocky Mountain News is very blurry, including the majority line and Martin totals.
RACE NOTES: First election with “Negro Suffrage.” The Rocky Mountain News declared, “During the forenoon most of the colored voters deposited their ballots. Democrats as well as Republicans cheerfully abiding by the law, and clearing the way so that they might approach the polls. The Black voters were duly impressed with the importance of the franchise conferred upon, and had fully canvassed the matter among themselves before the important day arrived.” This in contrast to the elections in neighboring Nebraska and Omaha where the “laws were violated and negro voters were driven by a mob from the poll.”
Harris only recorded votes in the First Ward of the four Denver wards.
