BBC Constituency Profile:
The Conservatives had kept a consistent vote of almost 60% in the former seat of Windsor and Maidenhead until 1992. The current home secretary, Theresa May, stood in Maidenhead in 1997 after the seat split from Windsor, and increased her share of the vote in 2005 and again in 2010. At that election she achieved the ninth-highest share of the vote among all seats held by Conservatives.
One of the most prosperous constituencies in the country, Maidenhead boasts thriving industries and pretty riverside villages. The town of Maidenhead boasts old family firms as well as the European offices of several multi-nationals such as Hitachi and Flexera Software, attracted by its good transport links and proximity to Heathrow Airport and the M4 motorway.
House prices in the Maidenhead area are among the highest outside London and forecast to rise with the development of Crossrail, which will stop at the main station.
