BBC Constituency Profile:
A large, sparsely populated constituency in Cumbria, Westmorland and Lonsdale was held by the Conservatives from 1983 to 2005, when they lost it to the Lib Dems. In the heart of the Lake District, it includes the towns of Kendal and Windermere and parts of both the Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park - tourism is its main industry.
Agriculture, particularly sheep farming, has traditionally been important and there is some light industry. This rural constituency had the lowest rate of unemployment in England and Wales, at the time of the 2011 Census. According to the data, 12.8% of its workforce are employed in the accommodation and food industry - the second-highest percentage in the country.
The seat also had the highest turnout of voters in England in 2010. Tim Farron held the seat for the Lib Dems with a 12,264 majority over the Conservatives. Labour polled so low it lost its deposit.
