BBC Constituency Profile:

Grangemouth's ubiquitous petro-chemical works and container port are key economic drivers of the Linlithgow and Falkirk East constituency. The development is a symbol of the area's long industrial past, another being the easily-visible slag heaps around the villages of Armadale, Blackburn and Bathgate, a remnant of its shale-mining era.

The constituency spreads from Grangemouth and Bo'ness down the south bank of the Forth to the ancient burgh of Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots (and Alex Salmond).

Voters in this area have a history of returning Labour MPs, among them the well-known anti-devolutionist Tam Dayell, who represented the old West Lothian seat from 1962 until his retirement in 2005. Labour's Michael Connarty then became the new member for Linlithgow and Falkirk East before holding it in 2010 with a 12,553-vote majority.
