Most people living in the constituency of East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow can be found in the new town of East Kilbride itself. It has grown from a sleepy village of 2,500 to a large town of more than 70,000, and is characterised by low unemployment and a highly skilled workforce.
A high proportion of workers in this seat, which stretches south to take in large parts of rural South Lanarkshire, is employed in manufacturing, with a host of engineering, printing and textile companies surviving alongside new high-tech firms. The constituency also takes in the old market town of Strathaven - known for its striking ruined castle - and Lesmahagow, which grew around a 12th century priory.
Labour's Michael McCann held the seat for his party in 2010 by 14,503 votes.
