BBC Constituency Profile:
With low unemployment, picturesque scenery and knock-on benefits from the nearby city of Aberdeen, Gordon is a desirable area to live. After holding the rural seat for more than 25 years, veteran Liberal Democrat Sir Malcolm Bruce is standing down and former Scottish first minister Alex Salmond has decided to contest the seat for the SNP.
In the 1980s, Gordon was Scotland's most rapidly expanding constituency, as Aberdeen attracted oil workers to its growing commuter belt. Towns like Ellon and Inverurie expanded quickly. Today, farming, forestry, food processing and whisky distilleries are also important industries.
Sir Malcom won Gordon for the SDP/Liberal Alliance from the Conservatives in 1983, holding the seat through several boundary changes. He kept it for the Lib Dems in 2010 with a 6,748-vote majority, although there was a 7.6% swing from his party to the SNP.
