Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

This seat is in the middle of Northern Ireland, south of Lough Neagh. Its main towns are Lurgan, Portadown and Craigavon, where there is a strong manufacturing sector.The biggest tourist attractions are Lough Neagh and Oxford Island Nature Reserve.

The estimated population of Upper Bann in 2013 was almost 121,000 - the highest population in a constituency in Northern Ireland. At the last census, 44% said they were Catholic and almost 50% said they were Protestant and other non-Catholic Christian. Just over 59% were employed. The constituency has seen some of the worst violence of the Troubles.

Politically, the constituency was created in 1983 and first held by Ulster Unionist Harold McCusker. He was succeeded in a by-election by David Trimble, who went on to lead the Ulster Unionists. However, in the 2005 general election Mr Trimble was beaten by the DUP's David Simpson. Mr Simpson retained his seat in 2010.
