Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

This mainly rural constituency lies in the north-western part of Northern Ireland. The principal town is Coleraine where the main campus of the University of Ulster is situated. The constituency includes the seaside resorts of Portrush and Portstewart. The annual North-West 200 motorcycle race takes place between Coleraine, Portrush and Portstewart. The constituency is also home to Royal Portrush, one of the most famous links golf courses in Ireland.

The estimated population of East Londonderry in 2013 was nearly 100,000. On census day, almost 42% declared themselves Catholic and 53% were Protestant or other non-Catholic Christian. A little over half (54%) were employed.

Politically, the main interest in elections has been the contest between the Ulster Unionist Party and the Democratic Unionist Party. The seat was held by Willie Ross, a member of the UUP and strong opponent of the Belfast Agreement, from 1974 until the 2001 general election. It was then taken by the DUP's Gregory Campbell.
