Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

The largely suburban seat of Old Bexley and Sidcup is sandwiched between industrial north Kent and densely populated south-east London. Sir Edward Heath's seat for half a century, the constituency remains a safe Tory stronghold in the capital.

The London borough of Bexley, which occupies a large part of the constituency, contains the largest proportion of owner-occupiers in London, according to the Greater London Authority, and the seat as a whole has the 11th-highest share of home-owners in England and Wales. While it has a comparatively high number of construction workers, wholesale and retail are its biggest employers. And it has the biggest proportion of secretaries and admin workers in the country.

James Brokenshire, the current Home Office immigration minister, stood in place of the previous incumbent, Derek Conway, in 2010 and raised the Tory share of the vote to 54.1%. Labour took 19.3% and the Lib Dems 15.4%.
