Description BBC Constituency Profile:

The fortunes of the Hackney South and Shoreditch seat are continuing to improve since the 2012 Olympics, with more green spaces, sports facilities and affordable homes in evidence. The Olympic Park is a big job creator for this area of east London, which is also known for its flourishing music and arts scene.

More than half of residents here are in social rented accommodation, the second-highest constituency ranking, while 8.8% of people - aged between 16 and 74 - have never worked, according to ONS 2011 Census data for England and Wales.

This seat was formed in 1974 and has been Labour ever since, with Ron Brown in control throughout the 1970s and early 1980s before moving to the SDP. Former London Assembly member Meg Hillier has represented constituents since 2005. She won 55.7% of the vote in 2010, with the Liberal Democrats on 22.4%, Conservatives 13.5% and Greens 3.5%.
