Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

Situated in north-east London, the seat of Hackney North and Stoke Newington benefited greatly from the London 2012 Olympics, with large parts of the area being regenerated. The Olympic Park has become an employment hub for the district. Improvements to the Hackney Marshes totalling £15m, meanwhile, were also secured.

The constituency has the fourth-highest ranking for the number of Jewish residents, 11.3% of its population,and nearly 63% of people have no cars or vans in their households, according to ONS 2011 Census figures for England and Wales.

The seat has been Labour since it was established in 1950, with David Weitzman dominating the political scene for three decades after the Second World War. Diane Abbott has represented the constituency in the Commons since 1987. In 2010, she secured 55% of votes, with the Liberal Democrats on 23.9%, Conservatives 14.5% and Greens 4.6%.
