Description |
Jules Grévy who had been elected in 1879 after the demission of McMahon, was uncertain about whether he wanted or not to run for a second term, due to his medical problems.
Convinced by his friends to run again, he faced two potential challengers. Henri Brisson, from the Republican Union, thought about running, which led Charles de Freycinet to announce that he would run too, should Grévy face any opposition. However, Brisson retired his candidacy and so did Freycinet. Grévy was re-elected President on december 28th 1885. He was forced to resign not even two years later after a corruption scandal.
