Description |
The election of Sadi Carnot in 1887 came out as one of the most surprising results of the french presidential elections hold by the Congress.
Following Jules Grévy's decision to resign from the Presidency, the competition among his follower was wide open. After the preparatory votes the day before the election, Jules Ferry seemed to prevail over Charles de Freycinet, Brisson, Carnot and Floquet.
However, the republicans were unable to unite behind a single candidate, and Jules Ferry drew to much hostility to be a consensual candidate. In the last round of the preparatory vote, Sadi Carnot's prospects seemed to rise. Sadi Carnot was even first in the last preparatory vote round (the sixth one), which was not attended by most members of the Congress.
On the first ballot, it was Sadi Carnot who emerged at the first place, far ahead of Jules Ferry and the candidates of the conservative parties, General Felix Gustave Saussier (who had refused to be a candidate) and Felix Antoine Appaert, and even more ahead of one-time favourite Charles de Freycinet.
The results were as follows:
Carnot 303
Ferry 212
Saussier 148
Freycinet 76
Appert 72
Floquet 5
De La Forge 2
Pyat 2
Others 2
Spuller 1
On the second general ballot, Sadi Carnot was elected against Felix Gustave Saussier whose candidacy has been maintained by the right wing of the Assembly.
The results were as follow:
Carnot 616
Saussier 188
Freycinet 5
Appert 5
Pyat 1
