| Description |
Special election to elect a new party leader upon the resignation of Naoto Kan. Because it is a mid-term leadership election the winner will serve until the end of Kan's term in September 2012. Also as a result of the mid-term election the new leader will be elected by the party's 398 Diet members rather than the electoral college the party uses for regularly-scheduled leadership elections.
Candidates must be a member of the Diet and have the support of at least 20 Diet members. If no candidate receives a majority on the initial vote a runoff will be held between the top two finishers.
