BBC Profile:
The seat was Conservative for most of the 20th century; for 28 years up until 1987 the MP was John Osborn.
In 1983 the Liberals beat Labour into second place and then in 1987 advanced again, to nearly a third of the vote. Osborn's successor Irvine Patnick still had a sizeable majority, which suffered only a slight reduction to 6,741 in 1992.

The Liberal Democrat victor was Richard Allan, who four years later increased his majority to more than 9,000. The leafy, hilly areas to the west of the city were where the captains of Sheffields steel and engineering industries made their homes. Unlike in many cities, the middle classes stayed within its boundaries.
