BBC Profile:
This is a new seat based around the market town of Selby. Tory MP Michael Alison won Selby at its creation in 1983.
Labour's John Grogan recaptured second place in 1987 and made a further big advance in 1992.
In 1997 he won the seat with a majority of nearly 4,000 but swings of 1.3% and 1.7% in the 2001 and 2005 general elections, respectively, reduced Labour's majority standing on the old boundaries to 467.
At the election, this new seat includes the Selby district council area. In addition, the Marston Moor, Ouseburn, Ribston and Spofforth with Lower Wharfedale wards are added from the Harrogate borough area. The name of historic Ainsty has been added to represent this area. Most of this added area was formerly in the abolished Vale of York seat.

There is a major brewing industry in Tadcaster, the only other sizeable centre of population other than Selby itself.

The closure of the Selby's three remaining coal pits in the spring of 2004 had a major social and economic impact on the region. The area is home to two huge power stations: Drax and Eggborough; the Drax complex is the biggest coal-fired power station in Western Europe.
