Description
BBC Profile:
This is a new seat based around the market town of Selby. Tory MP Michael Alison won Selby at its creation in 1983.

Labour's John Grogan recaptured second place in 1987 and made a further big advance in 1992.

In 1997 he won the seat with a majority of nearly 4,000 but swings of 1.3% and 1.7% in the 2001 and 2005 general elections, respectively, reduced Labour's majority standing on the old boundaries to 467.

At the election, this new seat includes the Selby district council area. In addition, the Marston Moor, Ouseburn, Ribston and Spofforth with Lower Wharfedale wards are added from the Harrogate borough area. The name of historic Ainsty has been added to represent this area. Most of this added area was formerly in the abolished Vale of York seat.

The York outskirts, including Bishopthorpe and Heslington, that were in the old Selby seat have been moved into the new York Outer constituency.

To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Based on the North Yorkshire town of the same name, the constituency extends north to the border with the York council area and south to the M62.

Much of the constituency is rural with flat farming and horticultural land and pleasant villages, criss-crossed by major roads.

There is a major brewing industry in Tadcaster, the only other sizeable centre of population other than Selby itself.
