Until 1997 Scarborough had been Conservative since 1918. Sir Michael Shaw, MP from 1966, regularly polled more than half the total vote until retiring in 1992 when he was replaced by fellow Tory John Sykes.
The swing against Sykes in the 1997 general election was almost 15% and Labours Lawrie Quinn emerged victorious. Sykes tried to make a comeback in 2001 and the Tory vote recovered slightly. But the overall swing to the Tories was less than 1%, with Quinn retaining the seat.
In 2005 a 5.1% swing brought the Conservatives' new candidate Robert Goodwill into the Commons with a majority of 1,245.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
This North Yorkshire constituency covers both the seaside towns in its name as well as many small villages inland.
Scarborough is the biggest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast. Notable features are the Spa, the Grand Hotel and the ruined castle.
Hull University has a campus in Scarborough specialising in arts and tourism.
Whitby is known for its jet production, fishing fleet and as an inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Outside the resorts, the remainder of the constituency is mainly in the North York Moors. Apart from tourism, there is also light engineering and food processing including McCain frozen food.
Scarborough is experiencing a revival in tourism. Regional development agency Yorkshire Forward is also promoting schemes to boost Whitby marina and the hotel and catering trade.
