Description BBC Profile:
Conservative Sir Giles Shaw was MP from 1974 until his retirement in 1997. When Sir Giles retired, Labour needed a swing of more than 7% to win the seat. In fact, Paul Truswell increased the Labour vote by 19% to become Pudsey's first Labour MP, with a swing of more than 13%. Truswell's percentage lead over the Tories increased in 2001 and held steady in 2005 to stand at 5,870.

At the election, boundaries are altered so that ward and constituency boundaries match. Pudsey will include the entirety of the Calverley and Farsley, Guiseley and Rawdon, Horsforth and Pudsey Leeds City Council wards. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This is largely a prosperous suburban seat sandwiched between Leeds and Bradford.

Engineering and textiles are the main local industries. Harry Ramsden's original fish and chip shop is still a popular restaurant in Guiseley.

The constituency is also home to many commuters. Horsforth is one of Leeds' more desirable dormitories, and many people work in Leeds and Bradford.

Leeds Bradford Airport is between Horsforth and Yeadon. Though the airport is not actually in this constituency, it is an important employer and economic driver for this part of West Yorkshire.
