Description
BBC Profile:
Dr Kevin McNamara represented Hull North from 1966 when, following the death of the sitting Labour MP Henry Solomons, he successfully defended a narrow Labour majority against the Conservative Toby Jessel.

Since then, the area has stuck firmly with Labour. Dr McNamaras seat became Kingston-upon-Hull Central from 1974 until 1983, when the Hull North seat was reconstituted without the city centre, but with the addition of the Bransholme council estate.

Dr McNamara stood down at the 2005 general election, but Diana Johnson retained the seat for Labour with a majority of 7,351. The Conservatives came third behind the Liberal Democrats.

At this election, the Hull constituencies are redrawn so that their boundaries coincide with local government wards. As a result, this seat loses parts of Sutton and Holderness wards to Hull East and gains a small part of Avenue from Hull West and Hessle and part of Bransholme West from Hull East. To find out what might have happened had these changes been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

The constituency has some leafy areas around the university, but is largely a working-class seat taking in the northern districts of Hull.

The university is one of the main employers, along with the public sector. This constituency has a growing student population.

The Sutton Field industrial estate houses many small businesses, from computers to bakeries, and there is a retail park attach
