BBC Profile:
Labour's John Prescott first won the seat in 1970, taking over from Harry Pursey who had represented the constituency since 1945. Mr Prescott has regularly returned absolute majorities in this seat. In 1997 he won 71% of the poll.
The Liberal Democrats moved into second place in 2001 on the back of a 5.9% swing and in 2005 saw a further 7% swing in their favour. However, this still left Labour with an 11,747 majority.
The Hull seats have been redrawn for this election so that constituency boundaries coincide with local government wards. As a result, this seat trades part-wards with Hull North, gaining parts of Sutton and Holderness wards and losing part of Bransholme West. To find out what might have happened had these changes been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The east end of this East Yorkshire city is largely an area of docks, terraced streets and housing estates.
This is the most working-class seat in a working-class city.
Major employers include the thriving docks themselves, the BP refinery on the estuary and Reckitt Benckiser, the descendant of the firm that was founded in Hull in 1840.
There is a large-scale programme of new building taking place on the waterside in Hull. The Deep, Sir Terry Farrells futuristic 'submarium', is located at the mouth of the Hull.
