Description BBC Profile:
From 1959 this was the seat of Labour's Anthony Crosland. His sudden death in office as Foreign Secretary in 1977 prompted a by-election which was won by a former history lecturer and television presenter, Austin Mitchell.
Mr Mitchell has held the seat for Labour ever since, although he only just survived in 1983, when his majority dropped to 731. He has had a comfortable majority in recent years, although it was down to 7,654 in 2005, compared with more than 16,000 in 1997.

There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.

Situated in North East Lincolnshire, Great Grimsby includes the eponymous port.

Its deep-sea fishing fleet has been almost wiped out, but the town remains a major container port and one of Europe's leading food processing centres, with hundreds of food-related companies based here. The market, now dealing mainly in imported fish, sells throughout the country.

Many people work in the oil refineries and chemical plants on the Humber estuary. Marine engineering is another important industry. But the modernisation of the area's industries has made them less labour-intensive, and Grimsby remains an unemployment black spot.
