Description
BBC Profile:
The predecessor Elmet constituency was formed in 1983 and was won quite comfortably for the Tories by Spencer Batiste in that year. He held it for the next 14 years, with a fairly consistent 47% of the vote.
But support for Labour steadily advanced, and in 1997 Colin Burgon won the seat with a majority of nearly 9,000. The Conservatives cut Mr Burgon's majority in 2001 but failed to make any headway in 2005 and Labour's majority remained at over 4,000.

This new constituency retains much of the Elmet seat and gains the town of Rothwell. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Elmet and Rothwell is a mixture of rural communities and small towns stretching around the east of Leeds. Its electoral wards are Garforth and Swillington, Harewood, Kippax and Methley, Rothwell and Wetherby. The constituency is named after the town of Rothwell and the last Celtic kingdom in Britain to be overrun by the Anglo-Saxons.

Rothwell is the main market town in the former mining area, which also includes the smaller Garforth and Swillington. These are all now primarily commuter towns for Leeds. Though all the mines have been closed, many former miners still live in the vicinity with associated health problems.

To the north is the affluent market and racing town of Wetherby.
